Deeper Waters ~ Denise J. Hughes

Deeper Waters by Denise J. Hughes

Denise has created an excellent work!  She has taken the time to be transparent, and has lots of personal testimony to bring to the table.  The instruction on going deeper is priceless, and something I will treasure and utilize for a long time to come.

At times, though, I felt the testimony overpowered the instruction.  She does have many episodes of testimony and tended at times to bounce from one experience to another like a rapid fire machine gun.  A few times I was left going, "what on earth was the direction or point".

As a personal journey, I can relate to her path, as mine is just as chaotic.

All in all, an excellent resource!  And the things I intend to remember are listed below.

Page 41
"Jesus's mother, Mary; His disciple, John; and all the Pharisees and other Hebrews standing near the cross knew their Scriptures. When they heard Jesus quote Psalm 22:1, (My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?) they would have recognized the etire theme of that psalm. It's as if Jesus was telling everyone, "You know how Psalm 22 ends. That's how this is going to end too.""
"People not yet born will be told: 'The LORD saved his people'" (Psalm 22:31 GNT).

The Telescope Approach (P.65-66)

1.  To read from Genesis to Revelation.

2.  Read the Bible in chronological order.

"The Telescope Approach gives us the breadth we need and the Microscope Approach gives us the depth we need."  (P. 78)  "For greater depth, there are four basic kinds of Bible studies:  character studies, topical studies, word studies, and book studies."

Writing by Hand Helps Us... (P89-90)

1.  Slow our pace.  We've trained our eyes to skim quickly over text, to look for key points and pictures.  When we write by hand, we're forcing our eyes to slow down.

2.  Dive deeper into the text.  By slowing our pace we're able to dive deeper into the text supporting those key points, which is usually made up of examples or statistics or quotes, providing more ideas to associate with the key points, which in turn help us remember the key points better.

3.  Focus better with fewer distractions.  Our eyes know how to go through the motion of reading without comprehending.  But when we're writing the text, we notice when our hands have stopped moving across the page.

4.  Connect a mental activity with a physical one.  The learning areas of our brains light up when we tie a mental exercise to a physical one.  Like the kind of kinetic movement that happens when our fine-motor skills, such as writing with a pen, coincides with the mental process of reading.

5.  Process information in more manageable portions.  Reading is processing.  All those strung-together words create intended meaning, and when we write the words, we're able to process their meaning in smaller, more manageable portions.

6.  Become better observers.  Not every key word gets its own featured text box in the margin.  So the ability to notice the key words within the actual text deepens our understanindg.  Writing leads to noticing.

7.  Stitch the parts together.  Many Bibles include subtitles over the passages, which have been added to the original biblical text and create artificial breaks.  Writing the Word stitches together the original flow by leaving out the inserted subtitles.

8.  Internalize the text.  We can read the text with our eyes and hear it with our ears, but when we write the text with our hands we're adding another dimension of learning through repetition.  Such repetition is crucial for internalizing a text.

9.  Memorize the text.  When we write a passage and then speak it out loud, over and over, we create neural pathways in our brains that reinforce what we're memorizing.

10.  Quiet our hearts and minds.  Something about the discipline of putting pen to paper quiets the soul the way David's harp soothed Saul.  Writing the Word is a deliberate act to refuse the tyranny of hurry.  It's a way of saying the words of Scripture are worth savoring - each and every one.

On page 119 - 120, Denise talks about being in an anti-abortion rally.  The group she was in was parked on a corner at a busy intersection.  One car pulled up to the red light, and the occupant stared forward blankly, no expression, trying to avoid looking at the "mob".

"A deep conviction overwhelms me.... WWJD...We don't have to speculate.  The Gospel of John tells us.
Jesus said, "neither do I. (Condemn you).  Go and sin no more (john 8:11 NLT)

His first words are full of grace.  Neither do I condemn you.

His next words are full of truth.  From now on sin no more.

What would Jesus do if He were standing on this curb with me? I can't imagine Him casting red-lettered stones at random.  He'd point out that we're all sinners in desperate need of grace.  That's the message I want to share.  I don't want to pick on one particular sin and herald it as somehow worse than my own.  We're all sinners.  And I want to reach the woman in pain - the one who's caught in what feels like an impossible situation - as much as I want to protect the life she carries inside her.  But calling her a murderer? That won't reach her.  Why would she ever want to step foot inside a church full of people who choose to spend an afternoon calling people names because of their sin?

...I shake my head and  silently pray: Father, forgive us, for we know not what we do.  I turn around and walk to my car."

"I didn't want to admit it, but I was hiding again, choosing to be invisible in my own community."
"The leafy, visible portion of the tree is our online life and the root system is our local life."

P. 176-177

"That's how ministry begins.  With one person.  Then a few.  Then a few more.

Ministry in deeper waters might not make sense at first.  It might even seem foolish to the outside world.  It will definitely require trust and total reliance on God."  (p. 192)

Jeremiah 17:14 (HCSB)

Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for You are my praise.

Wisdom Whispers by Sarah Koontz

Wisdom Whispers by Sarah Koontz

Life is full of noise, distraction, and stress.  One of Satan's most effective strategies is to pack our days with such emotional chaos that we have no room for quiet reflection or Bible study.  If you long to hear the whispers of wisdom in your daily life, join us for this 31-day study of the life and writings of King Solomon.

King Solomon was a wise man who didn't always make wise choices.  As we contrast Solomon's teachings with his life, we will discover great wisdom without humble obedience is for naught.  This study was crafted with busy women in mind and can easily be completed on your mobile device or computer.

Here are 6 quick facts about the Wisdom Whispers Study:

  • It's a FREE email-based online Bible study.
  • It takes just 10 - 15 minutes per day to complete.
  • It follows a five days on, two days off format.
  • It includes several free dgital gifts from Sarah's Creative Partners.
  • It launched April 2, 2018.  You can still get involved.
  • Register today at Living By Design

  • Sarah has also added an audio version to the daily email, so that you can listen in your car, or on your walk, or in your quiet time.

Make room for silence in your life; turn off the noise of the world and tune into the wisdom of your Creator.  Register for the Wisdom Whispers study today!

I have immersed myself into this study, and am enjoying learning about Solomon.  How he had so much, and how he was still led astray.  Come join us, and learn how you, too, can apply Solomon's lesson to your own life.

Book Review Spring of 2018

I can't begin to tell you guys how much I've really missed you.
The break was really nice, and I've obtained some perspective, and am really going to do some things differently now that I'm back.

First off, this is "exerpts" from my journey, not my whole journey. So going forth, you won't be seeing everything.

Secondly, some of the stuff I read is just crap.  I really don't want to paint anything in a negative light, because someone may be in a different place than me, and need what that item is putting out.

So, you won't be seeing everything that I read either.

I will however, have a book reveiw, ever so often.  And highlight the items that I really want to share.

Testimonials and Self-Help

Three Weeks to Forgiveness ~ Kimberly Dewberry

I have been very blessed to be a part of this book launch.  I do not, myself, suffer from addiction.  I was married to an alcoholic, an explosive and violent alcoholic.  I have children with this man, that are still suffering the shame, the neglect, the feeling inadequate, that comes when an alcoholic parent is no longer in the picture.

I was given an advanced copy to read.  This book comes out in April and I plan to purchase this book for all of my kids.  It's an eye-opener, and one I think will help my children overcome some of their insecurities.

I realize that only God can help them truly.  But maybe, just maybe, he will help them through Dewberry's words, seeing they are not alone in the world.

Bible Studies

Proverbs 31 did this study the first months of 2018.  And walking with Wendy through 1 John was an amazing journey.  I would not have thought that you could spend six weeks in the itty bitty book of 1 John.  But truly at the end, was thinking "as amazing as it was, I want more".  If, ever, there is a possibility that you do not feel God's love for you today, GO get this study and go through it.  It will truly change the way that you look at yourself!

Christian Fiction

I don't normally read Christian Fiction.  I read this one only because I was thinking I'd go to the LifeWay book club that meets once a month.  I normally, intentionally take my time reading books.  If I don't, then I am wasting my time, and won't retain much of what I read.  This book, though, I absorbed like a sponge.  And, it's ok, because I'm ready to read it again.  This will be one of those that I read often.  It's just a great book.  And knowing it's fiction, but could still have been, just an amazing ride through Scripture.

Okay, so, yes, I am back.  I have missed this outlet. No, it's not going to be so organized as before.  And, yes, I have lots more to share!

Random Little TidBits ~ June & July 2017

Questions of the Day

If Job starts out with a conversation between God and Satan, and the rest of the story is a result of that conversation, should there not be an "I Told You So" conversation at the end?

If our Church Father's were "totally" wrong on "all" of their interpretations, then how did Christianity survive until today, when we can now flippantly call them "idiots"?

Awakening the One New Man
"Peter could not even imagine seeing Gentiles becoming followers of Jesus without becoming "Jews" in ritual practices according to the Old Testament Mosaic systems. In short, being "saved" meant, "become a Jew." Dr. Jack W. Hayford, King's University
"Jesus gave the Gospel to the Jews and commissioned them to take this Gospel to the world, that is, all the nations." Dr. Raleigh B Washington, Promise Keepers

So....
1. I'm pretty sure that it's not been said "nations take the Gospel from the Jews, twist it, make it your own, and then exclude them from it."
2. If being saved meant "becoming a Jew", can't we presume that Christianity is a denomination of Judaism?
3. Jesus came to "include" Gentiles in the promise, to unite Gentiles with Jews, to eliminate segregation, and bring us together as one group. So why do we insist on maintaining our categories of hate?
I just wonder...

Book Club

The Mind Connection
Joyce Meyer

I got a lot out of this book.  A lot of it I already knew, but it's nice to get some confirmation from folks that have walked with Jesus longer than I have.

An excellent resource, and work book to work through some of your mental issues.  If you have any.  :D

Women Living Well
Courtney Joseph

I had a hard time reading this book, but I did finish it.  I know I should not let the fact that Ms. Joseph has recently experienced divorce affect my judgement.  Especially since I don't know the story behind the divorce.  But I hae to admit that reading the section on how to have a great marriage was a little hard to read.

A lot of good insight on marriage and raising children. Worth reading!

Spiritual Stolen Identity
Dr. Janice Gilbert

NO!  I just can't read this one.  I tried, I really really tried.  But I just can't.  Dr. Gilbert came to my church, and gave a GREAT sermon.  It was amazing, Spirit-filled message, and she was eloquent and energetic.  So I purchased this book.

Chapter one is about someone else altogether, was filled with mispelled words and ended with an inaccuracy.  IMHO

Chapter two was all about how her and her need to find her spiritual identity.

When you read a book of "How-To's" the How-To's need to be the focus with your story and other story woven into it.

I don't know if it got to the How-To's I couldn't stick with it after chapter two.  And, honestly, my not finishing a book, says a lot for my OCD self.

lies we believe about God
Wm. Paul Young

I can not say that I agree with everything that Young confronts in this text.  I will say that I absolutely love where Young stands, and his views are fresh and enlightening.  And he is most certainly not afraid to discuss many topics that others are just afraid to touch!

And anything that makes us think... is just a win/win in my book!

Me, Myself & Lies
Jennifer Rothschild

I found this book fascinating and very informative!
Definitely helped with the things that I say to myself!

Notable Quotables

"The only way to live without regrets is to do what you know you should do, when you know you should do it."

~Joyce Meyer

"The New Testament was originally written in common Greek - Koine Greek (most of it). Guess what the Greek word for accuse is, as in "the Satan is an accuser"? (see Rev 12:10). It is kategoro, from which we get the English word categorize. It means to put something or someone into a group to categorize them. We do this all the time, not always improperly, either. But when such categorizations carry an implicit judgment of value and worth, we are joining the adversary of our humanity, the Satan. Entering into divisive accusation reduces if not disintegrates the unity of our common humanity, and we beome butchers of the Body of Christ...
Believing (trusting) is an activity, not a category."
Lies We Believe About God ~ Wm. Paul Young

"The only people who succeed in life are those who can do what they know is important with or without emotional excitement to motivate them! When your get-up-and-go has got up and gone, you need to get up and get it back." ~Joyce Meyer

"If you think that "turning the other cheek" is the coward's way out, may I wager you have never tried it."

~Wm. Paul Young "lies we believe about God"

"Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason - I do not accept the authority of popes and councils because they have contradicted each other - my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. So help me God. Amen"
Martin Luther @ Worms

Bible Studies

Redeemed
Angela Thomas-Pharr

Got to say I liked this study.  The actual study part didn't consist of much, but it was packed full of good stuff.

40 days of prayer, and reading the Psalms!
Loved IT!!!

Ecclesiastes
Wisdom for Living Well
Courtney Joseph w/ Beverly Wise

I loved this study that Ms. Joseph did with her mother.  And my first in-depth look at Ecclesiastes.
I can say this is an amazing book of the Bible, and an amazing study guide to accompany it.

Job: One Chapter A Day
Courtney Joseph

I without a doubt LOVE doing the Bible one chapter at a time with Ms. Joseph.  I recommend this whole series highly.  I suggest you find a group to do it with, where there is discussion daily.

I did NOT, however, like the book of Job.

Well guys, I think I've just decided this will be my last Blogger post for a while.  The format is NOT user friendly.  I can't get things to lay out the way I like, and I find it difficult with my Ceramic Shop, and my OBS's to maintain a quality of writing that I am proud to share.

Stuff that I share from here on out will be for my benefit, if I share anything at all.

Thank you, and have a great day!
Shalom

Random Little TidBits ~ May 2017

Time for Testimony

We got our new sign made, hopefully they will install it sometime this week.

After reading "Never Unfriended" by Lisa-Jo Baker this month, I decided to try to set up a group of ladies that want to deepen their level of friendship.  A group that will regularly go out and do things together.

School is out for the summer, two restless teenagers at home, all day, most every day, this is definitely going to be an experience.  We have our Bible study lined up already, and Algebra that we are going to be learning, hopefully!  And many adventures that will be coming up, I am sure.

Went hiking on Monday (Memorial Day) up at Lake Fort Smith, my children felt it necessary to go ahead without us, and didn't realize we turned back, (just like we told them would happen), waited over an hour for them to return, Gary wound up having to go get them.

Went to see the King Arthur movie, that was fun, but having her replacement retainer all of three days, Shannon left and lost it again at the theater.

"What Are You Going To Believe"
~ Joyce Meyer

I love this collection from Joyce Meyer.  What are you going to believe about God? About yourself?  Complete with scripture that tells you what you should believe.

A handy reference book for future perusing!

When God Isn't There ~David Bowden

Out of this whole book, here is what I took away from it:  Sometimes you can't feel God's presence, and that's ok.
There are reasons for it.  Sometimes it's something you did, and sometimes it's not something you did.

A Mile Wide
~ Brandon Hatmaker

This was an excellent book.  And I've quoted it a few times below in the Notables.  It was filled with stuff not pertinent to me, but it was filled with a LOT of smack me in the nose stuff that I needed to hear.

If your relationship with God, His Church, and people in general is not satisfying, then spend some time in this book!

Never Unfriended
~Lisa-Jo Baker

This was absolutely a MUST read for anyone and everyone that struggles with friendship like I do.

Every chapter is chock full of tears and joy and laughter.

Ms. Baker was on the news recently and said if she could only make one point from the book it would be "Don't be afraid to go first".  This is the reason I started the Ladies Group in Fort Smith/Van Buren, and hopefully it will help ladies in my area.

"We Saved You A Seat" is the Bible study based off of this book, that my daughter and I decided to do this summer.  We are both looking forward to it.

Notable Quotables

"Here's a list of things John (the Baptist) did not tell them to do: memorize more Scripture, pray on your knees in the morning instead of in bed and half-asleep, get up in time to make it to Sunday school, wear shorts that cover your knees, only watch PG-rated movies, quit smoking, and, for the love, keep your hair off your collar.

Here's what he did say: "If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry" (v.11). "Dont take more than you need." Be content.
The good news doesn't begin with control, but surrender."

~ Shannan Martin "Falling Free"

"A Bible that's falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn't." C.H. Spurgeon

"I want you to call." That's an expression of urgency, intensity, and fervency. It’s an invitation to shameless and loud intimacy! God says, “Call to Me.”

Authentic Prayer by James McDonald

"Most of the people I see struggling with church today aren't frustrated because of what happens on Sunday mornings. Most are frustrated because of what's not happening. People are searching for connection on a deeper level. Maybe you can relate. You've got friends you tend to gravitate to in the hallways. You've got people who will grab a coffee with you if you ask. But you're starving for that deep connection with others you can literally do life and faith with. You're missing people in your life who can tell there's something wrong just by seeing the look on your face or by hearing the tone in your voice. You're hungry for true community. Biblical community. The kind we read about happening in the early church and the kind we saw with Jesus and his disciples."

A Mile Wide - Brandon Hatmaker

Yes, I can relate. And I'm loving this book.

"Teach me Your ways, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name" Psalm 86:11
"We must be teachable. There is something to be learned through every trial we face. God wants us to ook to Him, listen to Him, and live in such a way that honors Him."

Dr. Lee Sheppard, Mabel White Baptist Church, Macon, GA

"Sadly, people's memories are often dependent on their wills. Peter spoke of those who "willfully forget" God's works (2 Peter 3:5). There are thousands of people in the present day who are just as blind as the Jews were. They shut their eyes to the plainest facts and doctrines of Christianity. We point them to Christ, to the Person they need to be saved from their sins, but they do not believe what they do not like. It is a willful ignorance. They refuse to listen, read, contemplate, and see sincerely for truth. Jeremiah described foolish people as those "who have eyes and see not, and who have ears and hear not" (Jer 5:21).

Sinful people don't want to hear about their sinfulness. They hated Jesus because He told the truth. They hate Christ's followers for the same reason. But that does not change the fact that we are called to love our neighbors and to share God's truth. Be prayerful, asking for opportunities to reach people. Be bold, knowing you can help others be set free by the truth. Be like Jesus. Share the truth in love."

-Dr. Rob Zinn, Immanuel Baptist Church, Highland, CA

"People can deny the Bible, the church, or religion, but they can't deny your testimony. Tell them what you know! Find someone to reach out to today. Someone will listen."

Dr. Rob Zinn, Immanuel Baptist Church, Highland, CA

I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I wish to be, I am not what I hope to be; but, by the grace of God, I am not what I was. ~ John Newton (writer of Amazing Grace)

Bible Studies

We did Uninvited at church in the Monday morning Rubies group.  And I absolutely love Lysa TerKeurst! She has a way of speaking to me that no other Bible ladies encountered so far has been able to accomplish.

This study was a good supplement to "Never Unfriended", as was the Listen, Love, Repeat study, which focused on being a "friend" to others, by focusing on having an "other-centered" life.  I recommend both of these studies highly!

At The Box Office

MUST SEE!!!  I'm not going to spoil these other than to say:
Case For Christ: One man's journey to debunk, turned awry!
In Our Hands: The story of the 6 day war, and the recapture of East Jerusalem.

See these if you can!

It's been a great and blessed May!
